On 28 December 1594, William Shakespeare and his company, The Lord Chamberlain's Men, performed a sparkling comedy for Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich Palace. Oriole watched from a balcony, captivated by the candlelit silhouettes and the Queen's pearl earrings. After the final curtain, he found warmth under Shakespeare's cloak as the troupe returned by barge along the river Thames through dancing snowflakes to London.
These earrings represent the actors of that evening — a pearl for the head, a silver collar evoking the high ruffs of Elizabethan dress, and a vibrant glass bead for the body. Each pair is crafted with the collar set either upwards or downwards, giving every piece its own character and posture, much like the actors themselves.
